WHY I LOVE FRENCH COUNTRY DECORATING

There are so many things to love about French country decorating. Even if your personal style leans a different direction, you can find things to appreciate. The colors, the textures, the luxury, it all comes together in a perfect scene that makes you feel like you stepped into a peaceful French chalet.

My near and dear sister in law has been to France and Paris and shared words about being there that I hope paints an image for you.

"Paris, France is one of my favorite places on earth!!! The architecture is beautiful and old, most buildings are stone or brick with ornamental details and trim, gorgeous corbels and hardware. Retail shops have large picture windows with simple window lettering, some have awnings with the street number on them. The food shops often extend their goods outside of their building packed neatly in wooded boxes or wheelbarrel type carts. The cafes that have outdoor seating have petite iron chairs and tables with a tiny vase with flowers. Throughout the city, chunky black ornamental iron fences create unique and distinguishable spaces. The building are often narrow and quite tall. It's not uncommon to see a window boxes and clay pots overtaking the tiniest of balconies. If you have a chance to go, GO! Hope this info helps. Love you, always!! xoxoxo"

FRENCH COUNTRY LIVING ROOMS

The French Country living room is timeless with a relaxed elegance feel to the space like living in the European countryside.

A very neutral and relaxed color palette with antique furniture create European elegance with a ton of comfort.

Vintage and antique pieces enhance the character of a French country living room. Collect a variety of antique pieces over the years to give the room a gallery-like feeling. Keep in mind that antiques should err on the side of heirloom.

The French country home dabbles with refinery and elegance. While completely livable, there is a feeling that this room could become a venue for entertainment at a moment's notice.

The French country living room rarely makes a bold color or pattern its focus. An all-white (or mostly white) aesthetic is common with the French country style, but you can give it a soft pop of blush or taupe to avoid feeling too industrial. Stick with neutral colors and bring them to life with tonal pairings and different textures.

Fresh flowers as a centerpiece really bring the room together. And, of course, you can try to imagine that your bouquet came straight from the gardens from your French countryside estate.

Decorate your house with accessories that feel timeless, natural — after all, there is something beautiful about decor that is aged with love. Timeless accessories embrace a feeling like it would have actually been used in a home in the hills of Provence.

What I love the most about these two living rooms is the couches. I absolutely love slip covers as there's no greater feel. I once had a complete living room set that consisted of a couch, love seat, club chair and ottoman. If your from NH, I bought it at Ippolito's. Each of the slip covers were custom made for our set. I had this set for over 20 years - until my new little kitties decided it was much nicer to claw on it rather than sleep on it.

The coffee tables are simply perfect. Not decorative by any means, but yet still beautiful to look at. I personally have lot's of chippy white finished furniture that I've redone and there's nothing like looking at it. I love the look of natural wood on top of a chippy stark white base.

To evoke the spirit of a French country home, bring in a large mirror — perfect for French decor. Gilded frames are a welcomed American custom in French Country decor.

I love this deconstructed look of just the guts to a piece of furniture. I actually have two antique chairs that I've started doing this too. These are very popular in Restoration Hardware.

I also love all the vintage and antique finds in the living room on the right. I can honestly say that all of these decor pieces could have easily been bought at Goodwill.

As you probably already know, don't plan to completely complete a room in a day. It should come together over time. Each piece of decor should be something you love. There's simply said nothing more divine than doing this.

BATHROOM

Sponsored by Instagram

Simplicity means everything. All you need is a footed bathtub with a hutch to store all of your bath essentials to spell elegance. A gorgeous ceiling light wouldn't hurt either.

It only takes gorgeous lights to transform a space. Depending on what you choose for lights - they'll tell a story for the space their in.

This is a bathroom that I would expect to see in the Provence of France now. The ceiling seen here is the typical construction of homes built in the hillsides. Every piece here is gorgeous with a time worn elegance.

Gorgeous vignette for the bathroom. This is so French Country with the antique silver tray and the odd and end glass pieces that hold your bath essentials. The people in the hillsides of France in the 1800's were proud and hardworking people with not much money. They did a find job at recycling and reusing things.

ADORING FRENCH COUNTRY DECOR

French country style has a warm, comfortable feeling. The color? It's best to stay on the warm side of the color wheel with colors that have medium to low intensity. Think soft yellows, warm pinks, baby blues, and creams.

The furnishings should have graceful and simple lines. French Country features lots of painted furniture. Buying older distressed furniture would be a perfect fit for this style. Wrought iron or rusted metal accents are often incorporated into this shabby chic style...it's not all about wood decor.

This is one of my newest candle holders that I made using different vintage glass pieces, perfect for year round.

Here's a bunch of my plaster roses that I've painted in this barely pink. I've put them in a vintage milk glass vase.

FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN

There's nothing better than having beautiful tableware - preferrably antique tableware. Why not try your hand at trying to find a complete set at a thrift store.

My dear friend from Miami - Sponsored by https://shabbyfufu.com/french-country-farmhouse-christmas/

If there’s one room of a home most suited to French country décor, it’s the kitchen. That’s because the design approach, which originated in the 18th century, emphasizes a warm, homey feel. And there’s no better room than the kitchen in which to feature a welcoming, rustic décor.

French country kitchens in the 1700s may not have had center islands like the modern ones we have come to expect, but installing an island gives the space a homey, airy feel and provides the opportunity to feature antiqued woods and hardware in the center of the kitchen.

I love these kitchens for various reasons. I absolutely love the table on the left. Gorgeous natural wood with cozy dining chairs. I also love the hutch and ceramic trays on the wall.

In the kitchen on the right, I love all the copper and the chandelier speaks for itself.

A couple of very simple vignettes that you could create in your kitchen, just hop on over to your local thrift store because these things are always in abundance.

The overall appearance of a French country kitchen is elegant but comfortable like seen in these photos, without the type of gaudy decoration seen in earlier French styles. Earth tones like seen with the counter tops in the kitchen to the left predominate this kitchen.

Black granite counter tops are gorgeous against the white vintage cabinets made of true wood. Then balance the black with home decor like seen in the birdcages. Antique silver trays and other remnants of the past are also introduced here.

Here's another couple of simple vignettes that you could create. Whenever your shopping in a thrift store, keep an open mind as your browsing the isles. You'll be drawn to things that catch your eye. Rather than thinking that you don't need it, think of ways that you can repurpose it like seen here with the antique silverware and the antique pitcher in the photo to the right.

I love this dining room in the photo to the left. I love the antique white hutch and the antique natural wood table and chairs, and the gorgeous crystal chandelier. Here I would have left all the blue Delft in the hutch with the doors closed. I think this type of antique pottery is beautiful in a French Country dining room.

The photo to the right is the same one as above with all the copper in it. Here we're able to really see the island used in this kitchen and it's gorgeous with the natural wood base with the white granite on the top.

This chandelier is just stunning with the true heavily used wood table. It's a perfect juxtaposition. And this dining room to the right is beautiful with the white hutch and white dining chairs and natural wood table. I love this combination.

This is my favorite paint finish and I've done this on so many pieces of decor, as well as on furniture. It's my favorite. So I'm going to let a couple of other people show you how to create this gorgeous finish.

Use a smaller French Country crystal chandelier over your island. If you have a larger island, use two of these chandeliers.

We prefer using authentic antique crystal chandeliers, but when there not to be found - there's a wonderful selection presented by Home Depot for not a lot of money. Wayfair is another great resource in finding an antique style crystal chandelier.

Antique crystal wall sconces are not only a great find, but their beautiful in any room of your home.

In the Dining Room, they'd be gorgeous on either side of your hutch. In your kitchen, they'd be gorgeous on either side of a large mirror. In your bath, they'd be gorgeous on either side of your vanity. And my favorite, in your bedroom they'd be stunning on either side of your bed - just above the night stands.

Sponsored by Instagram

Crystal antique pendant such as these would be gorgeous over your kitchen island, or in your bedroom above the night stands. If you only find one, it be gorgeous in your front foyer.

Let's not forget about the place you'd often see a gorgeous crystal French Country chandelier - the dining room! This often is the space between the living room and kitchen. It's the place where your family gathers in the evenings, and your friends and family may gather on the weekends. So with this said, why not make your dining room as warm and inviting as you can.

Don't forget that gorgeous crystal wall sconces aren't just for their beauty - there meant to be used. So appreciate their beauty and use them wisely.

Look how gorgeous this close up of a pink crystal chandelier is - just stunning and this is because it's so different. This would be beautiful in any room of your home, especially your bedroom.

A FRENCH COUNTRY READING NOOK

There is nothing more divine than a Reading Nook that you can just cuddle in. You don't necessarily need to be reading a book. Maybe you just need a minute for yourself. Or maybe you'd like to sit in silence and have a glass of wine. Or maybe this is where you like to sit in the morning with a cup of coffee to get your mind in order for the day.

Got an empty corner in your bedroom? Fill it with a comfy chair swathed in soft sand colored linen. The French pride themselves on taking time to relax and get away so it seems fitting to dedicate a corner to practicing the art of relaxation.

Find a chair that's super cozy to you and buy it. A relaxing reading nook chair doesn't need to be an oversize super plush and comfy. You could have one that's more supportive on your back, it's still gorgeous.

Have you ever thought about using part of your bedroom for a sitting area. This is a perfect setup with two gorgeous white slip covered chairs and a dresser in between them.

Don't rule out your foyer being an area that you can sit and relax in. It is just another area in your home.

This is the type of chair that I once had and let me tell you, once you sit in a chair like this - your not going to want to move. There simply aren't enough words to describe how cozy a chair like this is.

FRENCH COUNTRY BEDROOM

Sponsored by https://www.softsurroundings.com/p/french-market-quilt/

Everything works beautifully here with the gorgeous bedding sitting on top of a gorgeous bed with heavily distressed white wood and a natural wood applique. Notice the piece of antiquity in the night stand. The crystal chandelier is the crem-de-la-crem.

Sponsored by Instagram

Every piece is intentional and could have been collected over time because everything's different. The gorgeous antique style metal bed with all of it's beautiful neutral bedding set's the tone. The night stands are larger pieces that work beautifully here as there very spacious and higher than a traditional night stand. The wall scones are also gorgeous and although their probably new, they look like they could have been collected from a flea market, just like the lamps and large wood engraved artwork.

Bedrooms are in need of lots and lots of throw pillows on your bed. Stock up on linen pillow covers because you’re French country bedroom is going to need them.

Notice how your eyes can't relax when look at this bedroom because there's so much decor. The bed is absolutely scrumptious in design with the natural wicker encased in wood and accented with the antique frames above. The antique baskets and arm chair follow suite with antiquity being added. The drapes hung to the floor in a very neutral color seem to embrace the room with everything in it.

This bedroom is very reminiscent of a 2nd floor bedroom in the hillsides of France.
